Kira’s Cure Bears Team – JDRF One Walk

Our Gives Back team joined the Kira’s Cure Bears for the 2016 JDRF One Walk in Phoenix. It was a beautiful day to walk alongside Kira in support of her hopeful quest to go from Type I Diabetes (T1D) to Type None. Each day Kira lives with the daily challenges of T1D, which include multiple cycles of blood sugar testing, insulin injections, middle of the night checks and constant carb counting. Despite these challenges, she does not let this disease stop her from living a full and active life.

Kira is a sophomore in high school with a 4.0 GPA, is involved in archery and her school paper, was awarded a Gammage Rising Star award by ASU’s Gammage Theater and is a member of the Key club and French club. Plus, her amazingly positive attitude makes her shine bright as a Youth Ambassador for JDRF.

Ten teams competed in a double elimination tournament for a chance to move on and compete on a regional and national basis, and ultimately for an opportunity to represent the USA Basketball Outreach in international play. Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys paid the entry fee, and Tom coached the team. The team finished second in the tournament. To get the Championship game, the team came back in the last two minutes to tie the game and got a critical stop on defense to force overtime. In overtime, they pushed ahead and won the game. A great comeback victory.

The boys fought hard but ultimately lost in Championship game to a group of older and very talented players. The players on the team got a chance to see where basketball might take them and learned that hard work and dedication is necessary to get there. HIV/AIDS is EVERYONE’s public health issue. Make Your Mark 26th Annual AIDS Walk is Nevada’s most significant fundraising event in the fight against HIV/AIDS, which is why Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys is a proud sponsor.

It funds supportive services designed to stabilize and empower clients living with or affected by HIV, including:

  • Guiding our clients through AFANLV’s referral and monitoring programs
  • Connecting clients with HIV specialists in various fields of medicine
  • Prevention education, including weekly seminars for clients and providers, as well as community outreach initiatives
  • Taxi vouchers and bus passes for transportation to healthcare providers
  • Rent and utility assistance
  • Nutritional counseling, food vouchers, and dietary supplements for those affected by weight-loss due to HIV progression
  • Kids’ program that ensures children affected by HIV enjoy a sense of normalcy
  • All AFAN programs are designed to eliminate fear, prejudice, and the stigma associated with the disease.

Join Grand Marshals Penn & Teller – along with local celebrities, businesses and community leaders – in making this a Las Vegas-style landmark event in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

For AIDS Walk Las Vegas’ 26th anniversary, Penn & Teller are challenging walkers to raise at least $250. If you achieve this minimum goal, Penn and Teller will match your fundraising dollar for dollar!* If you want a shot at doubling your contribution, join the Penn & Teller Challenge when you register!

*Penn & Teller Challenge donations will be matched until the maximum amount is reached.

You Can Make a Difference!

Last year, more than 6,000 people walked with us to raise awareness for the cause. We invite you to walk with your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, or alongside the thousands of other members of our community who come together to show their support.

Every donation counts, no matter the amount. Our online registration website has great fundraising ideas to help get you started, or you may share your unique idea(s) to help motivate and inspire others to reach their goals.

Aim high and be creative, passionate and persistent – your success may surprise you! Invite your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to join you and/or sponsor you for Make Your Mark 26th Annual AIDS Walk. Also, many companies will match your contributions through a Matching Gift Program. Check with your employer and encourage your donors/sponsors to do the same.

Although medical advances have improved and prolonged many people’s lives over the last few decades, the need for AFAN’s services continues to be crucial. In 1984, the founders of AFAN did not imagine that there would still be a need to advocate for our clients 30 years later.

So much has been accomplished of which we should all be proud, yet as we know, there is still much to be done. Your support, hard work and generosity will allow us to continue our mission.

Thank You from United Food Bank

Lerner and Rowe recently gave the United Food Bank out of Mesa, Arizona a donation that equated to 2,000 meals.  United Food Bank was referred to our gives back foundation through a social media campaign.

The campaign made it possible for the grand prize winner to pick the charity of their choice to receive a donation of $500. The winner chose the food bank as a means for them to pay forward the generosity they received from the food bank during a personal time of need.
